Guidelines for Local CCHD Grants

Each year Catholic Churches throughout the United States take up a special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. These funds are used to support those programs that address the root causes of poverty. 25% of those funds collected in this diocese are retained in this diocese to support local efforts.  Deadline for 2010 grant applications is March 31, 2010.

Guidelines for CCHD Funding:

  • Completed application must reach the Social Ministry Office
    by 4:00 pm on March 31, 2010.
  • Applications must be submitted on white paper and are limited to
    the two pages of the application form.
  • Projects must benefit a poverty group, with at least 50% of those
    benefitting from the project coming from the low-income community.
  • Members of the poverty group must have the dominant voice in
    any self-help project.  As a norm, 50% of those involved in the
    planning, implementing and policy making (e.g., Board of Directors,
    etc.) of a project should be persons who are involuntarily in the
    poverty group.

          For self-help projects which do not presently meet the above
          criteria, applicants should document:

                  a)  Why members of the poverty group do not
                       have the dominant role in planning and implementing.
                  b)  How members of the poverty group were involved in 
                       determining their need for the project.
                  c)  What time schedule is planned for assisting the poverty
                      
group in assuming leadership and control of this project.

  • The project activity for which funding is requested must conform
    to the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • The project needs to benefit at least some individuals and/or
    groups within the geographical area of the Diocese of Springfield-
    Cape Girardeau.
  • The organization requesting funds must be a not-for-profit
    organization.
  • Projects should innovatively address the basic causes of poverty
    and effect institutional change.

Application forms may be requested from the Director of Social Ministry at any time.  Requests are considered and funds are allocated once a year at the Spring meeting of the Peace and Justice Commission.
